Dr. Heather Avelar

Dr. Heather Brooks Avelar is a board-certified Psychiatrist at One Behavioral in Houston, TX. Dr. Avelar graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with her Bachelor’s of Arts in Anhropology with a minor in Biology and Chemistry. She then completed her medical degree at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Avelar completed her Psychiatry residency at the University of Colorado in Denver. She then completed a post graduate residency in Psychiatry and a Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Dr. Avelar is board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Geriatric Psychiatry. She is currently a member of multiple associations, including the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, APA, AMA, TMA, Orthopaedic Society and UTHSCSA.

In her vast experience, Dr. Avelar has worked closely with veterans and the geriatric population. She has participated in many projects to improve the efficiency and quality of patient data. She has worked with veterans who have dementia and has vast experience dealing with cognitive and neurocognitive difficulties. She also helped patients improve their adherence to treatment plans by working on drug rationalization.
